Reprogram Your Mindset: Stop Living in ‘What Could Go Wrong’ Default Thinking

Desire to increase the frequency of experiences unfolding harmoniously in your life? This post title could be misleading at first glance, assuming that it refers to a mistaken (‘wrong’) fallback. What it actually is about is the default mindset itself of the possibility of things going wrong. We live under a mental programming framework that focuses on the fear of things going wrong.

Industries, such as insurance, have been built on the ubiquitous mental program that things might go wrong. Things might go wrong with your health, your car, your property… your pet. To ignore, resist, or curse the empires of anxiety that have been built on the “what might go wrong” factor is not the point of this illustration. To examine the programming that has given rise to its existence is.

Breaking the Cycle: Overcoming Fear-Based Thinking

In a hypnotherapy session with a client, the anxiety of job searching and the pitfalls of securing desirable employment were expressed. The concerns about interviews, choosing the wrong opportunity, and making mistakes plagued this client. (You can replace ‘job’ anxiety with health, relationships, money, aging, retirement – pick your [anxiety] poison.) What emerged from the plight expressed was the larger existential question: “Why does ‘what could go wrong’ insidiously accompany us?”

Though one may possess an optimistic mindset, it typically is superimposed on the subterranean programming of wariness and fear. Our efforts to remain positive, optimistic, and motivated, I posit, are only necessary because of this unconscious strain of the fear of failure and “what can go wrong.” (Interestingly, positivity has its own industry, too.)

What’s at the root of this predicament? We (you) have forgotten that Life fundamentally knows what it is doing. Our existential amnesia has created the ‘mitigation zone’ in our awareness. We want to handicap the chances of wrongness in every way imaginable because the fear-based mindset accompanies our every thought.

The understanding illustrated here is not for the purpose of being Pollyannish, unrealistic, or delusional. It is to profoundly question (and therefore liberate from) the existential setup. The very fact that life as a self-sustaining force would be considered “unrealistic” indicates how far down the rabbit hole of distorted mental programming we are.

How come squirrels and flowers don’t need insurance policies?! It’s because Nature, sans the impact of our interference, hasn’t drunk the kool-aid. Nature ‘knows’ Life’s only mandate is to thrive. Period. Have we forgotten that we are an element of Nature too? This is the true delusion – to think we are independent of Nature’s fundamental mandate to thrive and therefore we have to concern ourselves. The most practical, responsible, and pragmatic thing you can do is wake up from the mental mesmerism. Not fight, resist, or curse it – just wake up from it.

The Power of Trusting Life’s Natural Flow

Wake up to the reality that your health wants to thrive. Wake up to the reality that your abundance is natural. Wake up to the reality that relationships are designed to flourish. Wake up to the reality that you are wholly enough. Dare to redefine what is ‘realistic’!

Can it be that simple? Here’s your analogy: When you wake up from a dream, you automatically do things differently than in the dream state, right? There is no magic here (self-improvement strategies don’t need magic). When you decide to wake up from the “life is hard” mindset, you do things differently, causing different outcomes, results, and consequences. Now, that part – is simple.

Summary

Many people live under the constant influence of “what could go wrong” thinking, a mental framework rooted in fear and uncertainty. This mindset is reinforced by industries like insurance and our societal obsession with mitigating potential failures in health, relationships, and finances. Even efforts to maintain positivity are often layered over an underlying fear of failure.

The solution isn’t to fight or resist this mindset but to recognize and “wake up” from it. Nature thrives naturally without fear, and as part of nature, humans are also designed to thrive. By trusting in life’s natural flow, we can free ourselves from fear-based thinking and allow health, abundance, and relationships to flourish. True empowerment comes from shifting our perception of what is “realistic” and embracing the belief that life is inherently supportive.

If you’re ready to release the fear-driven mindset, personalized therapy can help you step into a more empowered, trusting way of living.
