Mastering Focus: 5 Empowering Strategies for Distraction-Free Productivity

Distractions don’t have to distract!

How much productivity and progress are sacrificed to distractions? Whether it is the distraction that turns into procrastination or becoming vulnerable to distraction due to task-resistance, or perhaps distraction has led to the sabotaging narrative of ADD labels and disorders. It’s a big world, lots of “stuff” can always be distracting, but with these five liberating and illuminating Tips you can render distractions no longer distracting! These 5 Potent Tips can give control of your agendas back to your productivity mojo!

1: Recognize distractions are serving a purpose.

Before you rush to judge, condemn, and guilt yourself for allowing distractions to sabotage productivity and focus, consider what distracting elements may be alleviating.  Our judgements, history, and associations about necessary matters create existential weight on the psyche of the subconscious. This subconscious existential weight creates resistance and inertia about getting things done expediently and with sustained focus.

When you have deadline objectives for your writing project or work-related follow-up task that distractions undermine – cease blaming yourself for lack of discipline or follow-through and instead, released the judgments that have accrued about handling the matter. Distractions can serve as an escape – not from the task, as we erroneously assume – but from our toxic judgments regarding the task.

An effective, practical mechanism to facilitate the mental baggage release is provided at the end of this blog article.

2: Examine and assess if delay-prone tasks are reflecting a commentary.

Examine and assess if delay-prone task is reflecting a commentary on how you feel about the appropriateness or resonance that the task represents. Does distraction from work tasks reflect a re-examination of the work you do? Or the situational circumstances under which it is done?

Distraction vulnerability can often reflect a need to reexamine or reconsider what the effort means to you. In reexamining, do not reflect from a critical self-judgment perspective, but rather, remind yourself you are reviewing from a capacity to adjust or transform any matter that does not, or no longer fits your state of being.

3: Consider if distraction is indicating something else is trying to emerge.

If you are daydreaming about the next food recipe you’re going to create instead of preparing your meeting notes for Wednesday’s staff meeting, perhaps a new venture is demanding valid consideration. Rather than writing-off a frequent “distraction” consider if it may be communicating an authentic desire that’s wanting legitimate expression.

4: Consider if self-doubt is relegating genuine interest to distraction escape.

If a “distraction” reflects a genuine interest in a latent desire or expression and doubt that it is something you can successfully express or fulfill informs the inclination, then the distraction or being distracted is not the problem – self-doubt is the culprit. See the practical technique for neutralizing self-doubt at the end of this article post as well.

5: Recognize if emotional overwhelm is cause of distraction-needed decompression.

If an acute worry or trauma haunts your awareness, then distraction isn’t a lack-of-focus problem, but rather it is serving as a temporary pressure release valve. Seek counseling or capable support to address an underlying or overt personal issue that can lead to short attention span or escape releases. In this regard – your distraction-prone tendency is a message seeking resolution attention. Seek support – all overwhelming issues are not taxing in and of themselves, but rather, it is the perception we are harboring about them that causes paralyzing overwhelm.

Nobody – no matter how much evidence to the contrary – desires to innately sabotage their potential. All sabotaging acts stem from an interference, “a disturbance in the force” (for all you Star Wars fans). Cease going down the rabbit holes of self-blame and judgment regarding attention deficit, and heed what distractions are communicating and then they no longer distract because their message has been addressed.

Be your own salvation.

Activation Steps

Judgment Inventory List

Do a Judgment Inventory regarding four priority areas you desire to gain more focused, sustained, and unrelenting engagement of.  For each area, list all the judgments – slight or significant – regarding that area of your life. Then using the faculty of imaging or mental consideration, mentalize each area’s judgments as listed on a whiteboard and see or think of yourself vigorously erasing and wiping the ‘slate clean’ of all the accrued “judgmental weight” regarding each area.

Example: You’ve been working on that novel or non-fiction book – you are to put every judgment about that endeavor on your Judgment Inventory list: “is it worth it?”, “not sure what to do to continue the process”, “can I really ‘pull this off?’”, “I have procrastinated this long… (why not longer?)”, etc.

Engage this “clean slate” process continuously in the beginning of the distraction neutralization process providing opportunity for the mind to appreciate and assimilate the release of judgmental baggage regarding tasks. This process results in a profound self-forgiveness that liberates your motivation, emotions, and empowered focus.

Self-doubt Elimination Technique

Observe and genuinely consider how Nature naturally expresses its “desire” to grow and express itself. Then reflect how, fundamentally, you are an aspect of Nature as well and therefore nature can just as readily grow, express, and fulfill its intention (your desires) through you as well!

You want to be relentless with this Nature consideration and reminder until you deprogram from all the conditions and history that appear contrary to this fundamental reality. It works.
